Vatican State Secretary Italian Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (C) leads a mass for Irish bishops in front of Saint Peter's tomb at the Vatican February 15, 2010.

VATICAN CITY - An Irish cardinal Tuesday acknowledged leadership "failures" in the handling of Ireland's pedophile priest scandal after talks with Pope Benedict XVI.

"There have been failures of course in our leadership, and as one of the victims' daughters said, the only way we will regain that credibility is through our humiliation," said Cardinal Sean Brady, primate of all Ireland.

"Tomorrow is the beginning of Lent, time of penance, and we must begin with ourselves," he told a news conference.

Brady headed a delegation of Irish bishops for two days of talks with Benedict aimed at restoring trust in the Roman Catholic Church over the pedophile priest scandal.

The bishops vowed to co-operate with Irish courts investigating sexual abuse charges, the Vatican said.
