MILWAUKEE -- The new leader of the Catholic Church in Milwaukee addressing a tough issue head on.

For the first time, Archbishop Jerome Listecki is responding to a controversy involving the reporting of an alleged priest abuse case in his former diocese.

A 47-year old woman reported an assault to the Diocese in La Crosse where Listecki was in charge.

The church did not tell police, but after the woman went to authorities, prosecutors charged Fr. Edmund Donker-Baine.

In a letter to the Journal Sentinel, Archbishop Listecki said, "In this case, it's our policy to defer to the reporting adult as to whether to contact civil authorities."

You can see the entire letter in the print version of today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Listecki will address the controversy at a public forum today.
