IRELAND -- Bishop of Galway, Martin Drennan will not be stepping down from his post, despite calls to do so by survivors of clerical child sexual abuse.

In an interview on Galway Bay FM today the bishop confirmed that he has no intention of making such a move.

The controversy surrounds the revelations in the Murphy and Ryan reports which detailed the handling of clerical sex abuse in the Dublin Archidiocese.

Bishop Drennan told Keith Finnegan that resigning from his post would only cause further divisions.

Bishop Drennan was among 24 Irish Bishops to meet with Pope Benedict in the Vatican this week.

During that time, the Pontiff said that while child abuse in Ireland was a "heinous crime", more resignations from Irish bishops are not expected.

The Bishops were instrumental in helping to draft the Pope's pastoral letter, which is to be distributed to parishes in the coming weeks.
