WACO (TX) -- An hour before the deadline, convicted murderer Matt Baker's court-appointed attorney filed a motion for a new trial for the former pastor.

Judge Ralph Strother scheduled a hearing for April 1st on that request by local attorney Stan Schwieger.

Baker claims his former defense attorney Guy James Gray failed to adequately investigate the case, or have any experts in the fields of forensic pathology or toxicology take the stand.

Baker also says his counsel showed a lack of loyalty during the trial and didn't cross examine witnesses correctly, including his former mistress Vanessa Bulls.

Baker was convicted for the murder of his wife, Kari, back in 2006. He was sentenced to 65 years in prison.
