AUSTRALIA -- A Catholic educationist in New South Wales, Mr Peter John Ryan. 67, appeared in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 25 February 2010, charged with sexual offences allegedly committed against a young male student in Bathurst NSW in 1977.

The case was prepared by detectives from Strike Force Belle, who are investigating certain matters involving St Stanislaus College in Bathurst.

St Stanislaus College is operated by the Catholic order of Vincentian Priests and Brothers, and it is believed that Mr Ryan was once connected with this order. However, he separated from the Vincentians many years ago, and has most recently worked (as a lay person) in the Catholic school system in the Parramatta Catholic diocese which covers Sydney's outer-western suburbs.

According to the charge sheet at the Downing Centre Local Court, Mr Ryan's date of birth is 13 August 1942. The charges relate to three incidents of "indecent assault on a male under 18 years", allegedly committed in 1977 against one victim.

Mr Ryan was arrested at his home in Newington, western Sydney, on 22 February 2010.

At Downing Centre Local Court on 25 February 2010, Mr Ryan's lawyer indicated that Mr Ryan would plead not guilty to the three charges.

Magistrate Jane Culver continued Ryan's bail until the matter returns to court in April.

Detectives from Bathurst are continuing their inquiries.
