Eugene Smith

MASON - A man accused of sexually assaulting three girls between the ages of 6 and 8 will stand trial after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing.

Eugene Smith, of Delhi Township, is charged with eight counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He waived his right to the hearing Tuesday in 55th District Court, officials said. The hearing would have determined if there was enough evidence for a trial.

Smith's attorney, Eric Tomal, did not return a message seeking comment.

The alleged incidents happened in Williamstown Township and date back at least four years, according to court documents.

None of the three girls were related to Smith, although Ingham County sheriff's officials said he knew them.

Officials said the incidents came to light after the girls told their parents. At least one of the parents confronted Smith, and Smith turned himself in. He was arrested last month.

Smith once held several positions at an undisclosed Eaton County church, including Sunday school teacher, officials have said. None of the eight charges are related to his work with the church.

Smith is being held without bond at the Ingham County Jail.

No trial date has been scheduled.
