Greek police say they have arrested a priest from Kosovo wanted by Serbia on suspicion of embezzling state and church funds.

A police statement says Simeon Vilovski was taken into custody on an international warrant Thursday in Peraia, about 315 miles (510 kilometers) north of Athens.

Belgrade's Higher Court has launched an investigation of the Orthodox Christian priest on suspicion that he embezzled money for reconstruction of churches in Kosovo.

Vilovski served in Kosovo under hardline Orthodox Bishop Artemije, who was recently replaced by the church over the same allegations.

Hundreds of Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries are located in Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
