In an interview, Abbot Martin Werlen said he had been informed that 60 people were claiming to be victims of sexual abuse by clergy members. If the allegations were to be found true, it would be up to the victims to decide on further legal steps, according to the Mittelland-Zeitung, cited by the SDA news agency. The abbot of Einsiedeln, who is part of a Bishops Conference investigating such charges, confirmed that confessions would be kept in confidence. Werlen did not say when or where the reported cases were said to have occurred. Similar allegations and cases of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church have surfaced in recent years in other European countries, including Germany and Ireland.
