SCOTLAND -- A PAEDOPHILE priest who set up a "family friendly" Scots guest house has fled to the Canary Islands.

Bill Carney, 60, was exposed by the Daily Record in November when he was named as Ireland's most notorious sex beast cleric.

We tracked him down to the Amberside Guest House in Murray Park, St Andrews, just a few minutes' walk from the Old Course and the Fife town's West Sands beach.

Family and friends had no idea of his catalogue of sex abuse in children's homes.

But his new life came tumbling down when the Murphy Report said Carney was suspected of abusing 32 victims - and investigators believe there were many more.

The crimes, in the 70s and 80s, were covered up by the Catholic Church. In 1983, Carney pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault. In 1992, he was defrocked.

At least one victim committed suicide, yet Carney never faced justice and is not on the sex offenders' register here because his crimes were committed outside the UK.

After our story appeared, Carney's wife Joan - who met him in 1998 and had no idea about his past - disowned him.

Carney was tracked down to Gran Canaria, where he told BBC Newsnight: "I have read the report six or seven times and would dispute all of it except that I have been convicted of two charges in 1983.

"Twenty-six years later and I continue to get my life back together one day at a time."
