The ochre robes of sainthood proved to be a convenient cover for Santosh Madhavan. Wanted by the Interpol on an embezzlement case, the class XII dropout grew a beard and started living in Thiruvananthapuram under the assumed name of Swami Amrita Chaitanya.

But his fake world collapsed a couple of years ago when a local magazine published a scoop about a pending notice against his gunrunner namesake, wanted in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts. The magazine was unaware that the Interpol notice for the gunrunner mistakenly carried the fake swami’s photograph. This notice urged a woman to file a case with the UAE police claiming Madhavan had cheated her of Rs 45 lakhs.

When the news hit the stands, Madhavan disappeared, reemerging later to plead a case of mistaken identity. But cops doubted his credentials and the scrutiny extended to the Shantiteeram Trust established by him in Kochi. What emerged then were shocking tales of sleaze. The man had made benami (anonymous) investments and abused three girls from an orphanage established by him and a 22-year-old woman. Madhavan’s own indiscretion turned out to be the strongest evidence against him — he made CDs of his sexual escapades with the girls and these were recovered from his locker after his arrest in May 2008. He was convicted for rape and is currently serving a 16-year term in the Central Prison.
