  Calls for Cardinal Brady to Resign Over Abuse Meeting

IRELAND -- There are calls for the resignation for Cardinal Sean Brady – who has been linked to an alleged cover up of child sex abuse

It's emerged that he attended meetings with teenaged victims of convicted paedophile Father Brendan Smyth – during which they signed oaths of silence about their abuse


The Primate of All Ireland Cardinal Sean Brady last night confirmed that he attended two secret meetings in 1975 in his capacity as secretary to the Bishop of Kilmore

At this meeting – two of the victims of Father Brendan Smyth – were asked to swear an oath not to disclose that the Church was investigating the abuse

The abuse was not reported to gardai

Details of what tranpsired at the meeting are likely to be disclosed in a High Court action being taken by a woman who claims she was abused by Brendan Smyth

Cardinal Brady has been named as one of the defendents in the case and is being sued in a personal capacity and as Primate

A spokesperson for the cardinal said there was no effort on the his part to cover-up for Fr Smyth and that he passed the reports to his bishop as a matter of urgency.
