VATICAN CITY -- Vatican officials have denounced attempts to link Pope Benedict XVI to a child abuse scandal in his German homeland.

"The accusations are failed attempts to involve the Holy Father" in the sexual abuse scandals, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Saturday.

"There have been those who have tried, with a certain aggressive persistence, in Regensburg and Munich, to look for elements to personally involve the Holy Father in the matter of abuses," he added.

Father Lombardi, however, did not elaborate on the identity of individuals or organizations that may have been behind what he implied as measures to defame or scandalize the Pope.

"These events which are spoken of have been amply clarified by the archdiocese of Munich," he further explained.

Observers note that Vatican's reserved tone in publicly responding to the charges does not come through as being so 'amply clarifying' as Father Lombardi exclaims.

Pope Benedict XVI is accused of trying to hush up reports of sexual abuses by Catholic clergymen and failing to adequately punish a suspected pedophile priest in Germany some 30 years ago.
