IRELAND -- A retired Garda who investigated cases of child sex abuse in the Donegal Gaeltacht has said an independent inquiry must now be carried out in every diocese in the country to end the 'culture of cover-ups' once and for all.

Martin Ridge was speaking following revelations involving the Catholic Primate of All-Ireland Cardinal Seán Brady and how he dealt with paedophile priest Brendan Smyth.

Cardinal Brady has reiterated that he will not be resigning and he has rejected suggestions that his actions led to Fr Smyth continuing to abuse children for a further twenty years.

Martin Ridge was involved in the investigations that uncovered a horrific series of abuse cases involving Fr Eugene Greene and school-teacher Denis McGinley, both of whom were later convicted.

He went on to write the book 'Breaking The Silence', which revealed that the Church knew about the abuse, but ignored the problem.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Mr Ridge said Cardinal Brady cannot use the governance of canon law as a way of defending his actions.
