IRELAND -- Victims of clerical abuse in the care homes of the Sister of Nazareth nuns are to meet the Bishop of Derry later.

Dr Seamus Hegarty caused controversy by saying sex abuse victims have found pursuing cases through the legal system more traumatic than the abuse itself.

Dr Hegarty said pursuing legal cases could be more traumatic than abuse

Margaret McGuckin, who wrote to the Pope about remarks made by the bishop in December, is leading the delegation.

She said she believed it was "a positive step" that the meeting was taking place.

"There's no place to hide for anyone, and we do hope Bishop Hegarty will believe us and take on board what we're saying," she said.

"We will not be fobbed off and we will continue until we get justice."

Speaking a month after a damning report into clerical sex abuse in the Dublin archdiocese, Bishop Hegarty said he was "not sure" if more resignations by bishops would "contribute in any great way towards healing".

"In recent times I have been talking to victims who had been involved in court proceedings," he said.

"They would say their experience in court was much more traumatic for them than the original sexual abuse."
