IRELAND -- Abuse victim support group One in Four has today called for the Government to intervene in the controversy surrounding Cardinal Sean Brady.

The call comes as more pressure mounts on Brady to resign after he admitted being present in 1975 when two young victims of paedophile priest Brendan Smyth were asked to sign an oath of secrecy.

One in Four claims that the inability of senior clergymen to acknowledge their role in endangering hundreds of children brings into question their ability to implement child protection procedures.

The support group says it is clear from the response of the Pope, Cardinal Brady and the Catholic Church that they have no intention of taking responsibility and that it is time that the Government stepped in.

Earlier, the Environment Minister commented on the controversy, saying it is for Brady's own conscience to decide what to do regarding his handling of the abuse allegations.
