ST PATRICK'S administrator Fr Gerry Campbell has backed Dundalk's parish priest, Cardinal Sean Brady, as calls for his resignation continued yesterday ( Tuesday). In an interview with on Monday, Fr Campbell said the parish was supporting Cardinal Brady, despite increasing pressure on the leader to resign.

He said he had been speaking to the cardinal as the furore erupted on Sunday and said he was sure he was 'devastated'.

Fr Campbell said he wanted people to pray for the cardinal and asked that people 'remember their personal experience of him'.

He said he believed that Cardinal Brady

church 'would come through this'. He said: 'I believe that he will come through this and hope that he will receive the support and strength to come out'.

Fr Campbell added there had been huge changes in how the Catholic Church dealt with allegations of child abuse and in the Armagh Diocese, Cardinal Brady had been at the forefront of putting in place structures that safeguarded children.

He said: 'I would ask that people pray for Cardinal Brady and also, if people have had any personal experience of him, to remember that.

'Cardinal Brady knows that we are praying for him and I'm not getting the impression that people here want him to step down.

'I don't feel he should resign and I speak for a number of priests, not all. Cardinal Brady has been very proactive in setting up new structures to safeguard children and he trusts people to get on with their jobs.

'I would like people to understand the two sides of the story and to listen to what Cardinal Brady has to say.

'I would like people to remember the time that was in it and remember what we are doing now. Of course, there would be no excuse if something like this happened now and Cardinal Brady knows that'.

Fr Campbell, who has been co-ordinating the safeguarding children procedures in the diocese since 2004, said providing a safe environment for children was a top priority.
