Fr Iggy says that when it comes to the subject of child abuse, 'there is no room for wriggle room or compromise'.

'We can nod or wink when it comes to something like dodging tax, but this is a moral absolute.' Of course, he adds, the decision to step down is entirely up to the Cardinal, and he can't be forced.

'I feel sorry for him because essentially I feel he is a decent man, but dealing with the subject of clerical sex abuse can be like wrestling an octopus; just when you think you have pinned everything down, another tentacle comes up somewhere else.'
