A Swiss priest has confessed to sexually abusing children in Austria and Germany in the 1970s, a diocese in Switzerland's eastern city of Coire said Wednesday.

One of his victims had on Monday informed the diocese's bishop about the abuse and the priest was summoned, it said in a statement.

The man confessed and was immediately dismissed from his duties as administrator of a parish in the central canton of Schwyz.

On the recommendation of Croire bishop Vitus Huonder, the case was referred to police in Austria's Vorarlberg region who had started an investigation, the statement said.

The sexual abuse was committed in Birnau in Germany and at Mehrerau in Austria's Vorarlberg, it said.

Vicar Christoph Casetti told the Swiss press agency ATS that the bishop had not known about the abuse.

There has been a rash of similar accusations from Vorarlberg. At the end of last week, 16 people had made 27 allegations of paedophilia against priests, some dating back nearly 50 years.

There are charges that at least 10 minors at a boarding school at the monastery in Mehrerau were abused between 1970 and 1982. Authorities say other cases may come forward.

Abuse scandals have also swept Catholic churches in The Netherlands and Ireland.
