Details of the handling of sex abuse allegations made in 2001 by two young women against a priest in Cardinal Brady’s Armagh diocese were issued by the Catholic Communications Office this evening.

The priest, who is named in the Catholic Communications Office statement, was acquitted by the Courts in Northern Ireland following a trial on one charge arising from those allegations.

However, and despite this, the priest has remained suspended from ministry by Cardinal Brady and is forbidden to wear clerical attire.

After his acquittal in the Courts the complainant, on behalf of whom no prosecution was brought, sought compensation for her injuries from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and, separately, from the priest and from Cardinal Brady.

The complainant and the priest subsequently settled the case and she withdrew her proceedings against Cardinal Brady and the Compensation Board.
