Gardai have told TV3 News that a criminal investigation into Cardinal Sean Brady's role in the Fr Brendan Smyth controversy is "very likely".

The move comes as Fr Brendan Smyth's religious order, the Norbertine Community, apologised to Cardinal Sean Brady and those abused by the paedophile priest for failing to remove him permanently from the exercise of his ministry.

Today the Bishop of Derry became the latest senior Church figure to be accused of a cover-up.

Today claims emerged that a woman abused by a priest was sworn to secrecy in an out-of-court settlement.

The victim went public with her claims that she was abused for a decade by an unnamed priest but said she was bound to secrecy in a legal deal which involved the Bishop of Derry Seamus Hegarty.

A spokesman for Dr Hegarty said would not be commenting until a detailed review had been carried out.
