Cardinal Brady "Understood Oaths Were Not Permanently Binding" Ireland Online March 19, 2010 http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/ireland/cardinal-brady-understood-oaths-were-not-permanently-binding-450661.html
A spokeman for Primate of All-Ireland Sean Brady has said the Cardinal understood the oaths of silence taken by two of Fr Brendan Smyth's victims at a meeting in 1975 were not permanently binding. In a statement this evening, the spokeman said it was understood by all parties that the oaths would no longer be binding once all evidence was gathered from witnesses. The statement also said the oath of silence was applied to ensure the process was robust enough to withstand challenge by Fr Smyth. Cardinal Brady has come under fire for representing the Church at these meetings. |
