Hamburg - The German Catholic church is investigating more than 250 cases of child sexual abuse by clerics, dating back to the 1950s, a survey by the German Press Agency dpa revealed on Saturday.

Of these, around 160 allegations relate to the Jesuit Order, where the first abuse cases emerged late January - prompting more and more victims to come forward.

The latest figures came as German Catholics were waiting for Pope Benedict XVI to release a pastoral letter, in which he is expected to explain how the church will deal with cases of child sex abuse by priests.

The letter follows revelations of widespread paedophilia by priests over decades in Ireland, as well as mounting cases of child sex abuse by clerics in the Netherlands and Austria.
