DENMARK -- A 'competent' group will be set up by the bishop to look into old abuse cases involving clergy and children

The Danish Catholic church has said it will investigate a number of sex abuse cases after its leading bishop came under heavy fire for his comments in recent weeks.

Bishop Czeslaw Kozon previously said that he was under no legal obligation to immediately report knowledge of sexual abuse cases involving children and clergy to the police.

But he came under public fire, not just from the media and human right's groups but also from members of his own church, when he admitted that he had heard of some cases of abuse dating back to the 1980s.

'Bishop Czeslaw Kozon now addresses this criticism by setting up a group of competent people to investigate these cases as soon as he comes back from an official visit to the Pope on 27 March,' read a statement from the church on Sunday.
