BOSTON - It was announced today that a former New York school basketball coach has been indicted for sexually assaulting a young player on a trip more than 30 years ago.

Robert Oliva, 65, was indicted on two counts of rape of a child and one count of disseminating pornography to a minor.

The assault occurred on a trip to Boston in 1976 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel. Prosecutors allege that Oliva sexually assaulted the boy and showed him pornography.

Despite the assault taking place decades ago, prosecutors say they were able to charge Oliva due to a statute of limitations on child sexual abuse that lasts 27 years. This statute is in place because victims tend to report the abuse later. The victim reported the abuse to Boston Police last year.

“The victims can carry feelings of shame and guilt for decades before they're ready to tell what happened to them,” said District Attorney Daniel F. Conley. “Oftentimes, it's only in adulthood that they realize the abuse was not their fault."

Also, because the defendant spent time outside of Massachusetts, it did not count against the statute.

Oliva coached 27 seasons at Christ the King Regional High School. He resigned last year, citing heart problems.

Oliva will face arraignment at a later date.
