WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — A former teacher and pastor pleaded guilty to incest Wednesday in Mingo County Circuit Court.

In exchange for the guilty plea, another charge of sexual abuse was dismissed against 36-year-old Johnny Ray Dempsey of Delbarton, W.Va. The defendant was represented by Attorney Mark Hobbs.

The incident is said to have occurred in June 2009.

Mingo County Sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Smith said the suspect admitted during questioning that he had sexual contact with a juvenile and stated he had done so by improperly touching the juvenile.

Chief Judge Michael Thornsbury has set Dempsey’s sentencing for 10:30 a.m., on May 3. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Following court proceedings, Dempsey was remanded to the Southwestern Regional Jail in Holden, W.Va.
