UNITED STATES -- The group called Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests is criticizing the Vatican for its handling of the recent scandal involving Wisconsin abuse victims.

The group claims in a news release that top Catholic officials in Rome have publicly insulted abuse victims in the last few days.

They refer to the Vatican newspaper that noted there was a "clear and despicable intention" to strike at Benedict "at any cost."

Recently released documents show that a Vatican office led by the pope, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, halted a church trial against a Wisconsin priest accused of molesting some 200 boys at a school for the deaf. The Vatican has defended the decision, saying the case reached the Vatican only in 1996, two years before Murphy died.
