CANADA -- I would think most people might find the Pope's letter of apology absolutely unacceptable. Sorry, it just doesn't cut it. It can be a part of it but the major message should have been: "We take full responsibility and this will not be tolerated."

In his letter, the Pope didn't specifically insist that cases of child sexual abuse be reported to the police by the church. These crimes are decades past being left to the Catholic Church to police itself.

The Pope is the person with the ultimate power in his church. More than anyone, he could -- even at this very late stage -- start protecting children from these monsters.

It's inconceivable that a clear promise was absent in his letter, stating that the civil authorities will be contacted, without exception, on all reported abuses of children by priests, bishops and any others who have been given any position of trust by the church.

What could possibly be the reason for failure to include, as a matter of policy, such a statement? I am not associated with any religious organization or belong to any church.

One doesn't have to be, to be disturbed about the abuse of children. Particularly when those abuses are committed by those who profess to love and protect them.
