CINCINNATI -- Three men who claim they were abused by priests are asking for the pope to be held accountable for their ordeal.

The men filed a lawsuit in 2004, accusing the Vatican of negligence.

Attorneys want to question the pope under oath about the rampant sex abuse scandals plaguing the Catholic Church.

Vatican attorneys have launched a legal defense, saying the pope has immunity as a head of state and that American bishops who oversaw abusive priests weren't employees of the Vatican.

There are strong opinions on both sides by people in the Tri-State.

"The pope does function as the chief executive officer and he ultimately is responsible for the actions of his employees," Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests member Dan Frondorf said.

"The local archbishop's are supposed to take care of that stuff. They don't have to go to the pope except to let him know what's going on. I don't know why the pope has to be the sacrificial lamb for all this," Cincinnati resident Mike Logsdon said.

There are some allegations being leveled in Europe that the pope knew of some abuse cases and moved to cover the cases up.
