Judicial officials say a priest in France's Normandy region is facing preliminary legal charges for suspected sexual abuse of a minor nearly two decades ago.

The officials said Father Jacques Gaimard of Rouen was placed under investigation _ a step short of formal charges _ Thursday following a legal complaint brought by an alleged victim in February last year.

The abuse allegedly took place in 1992 and 1993.

Police were questioning another priest from the diocese as part of a probe into illegal possession of images of child pornography _ though he has not been charged.

Rouen archbishop Jean-Charles Descubes said the two have been temporarily suspended and that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Vatican was investigating the cases.
