WASHINGTON — A U.S. expert on the Vatican says a Good Friday homily at St. Peter's Basilica comparing accusations against the church over the sex abuse crisis to the suffering of Jews is evidence of a failing strategy.

The Rev. Thomas Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, says Pope Benedict XVI doesn't seem to have any good advisers on how to handle the sex abuse scandal.

In his Good Friday homily, the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa likened accusations against the pope and the church in the sex abuse scandal to "collective violence" suffered by the Jews.

Reese says people at the Vatican should have some idea of how their words will be perceived outside. He says he fears European bishops are making the same mistakes as U.S. bishops years ago.
