GERMANY -- Muenster, Germany - A disturbed 44-year-old man who invaded an Easter service Sunday in a German cathedral flailed at Felix Genn, the bishop of Muenster, with a broken broomstick, police said.

The assailant knocked over a lighted 1-metre-tall Easter candle and its stand, then, waving the stick, made for the bishop. Genn fended off a blow with a metal incense shaker. Worshippers rushed to the altar, grabbed the man and bundled him out of the church.

Genn continued with the Sunday service in Muenster, a main Catholic centre. Police said Genn was sure the man had aimed the blow at the bishop. The attacker, who had previously been in treatment, was taken to a psychiatric hospital for observation, police said.

Easter Catholic services in Germany have been overshadowed by a scandal over church concealment of sex abuse and violence, mainly in the period from the 1950s to the 1980s. Genn has apologized for the church's failures. The man's motives were unknown.
