LOS ANGELES — The next leader of the Los Angeles archdiocese has introduced himself to Southern California.

Archbishop Jose Gomez, who now leads the Archdiocese of San Antonio, is in line to become the highest-ranking Latino in the American Catholic hierarchy.

He spoke Tuesday at a church in Los Angeles, hours after he was appointed to succeed retiring Cardinal Roger Mahony on Feb. 27 as leader of the nation's largest archdiocese.

Mahony was dogged by the clergy sex abuse scandal and developed a reputation during his quarter-century tenure as a liberal-leaning leader.
