San Antonio’s Archbishop Jose Gomez has been named as the successor to Cardinal Roger Mahoney upon his retirement as Archbishop of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has the largest archdiocese in the United States. Gomez has been named coadjutor archbishop of the Los Angeles archdiocese by Pope Benedict XVI and will serve as an aid to Cardinal Mahoney in the governance of the diocese until he steps down.

The Vatican did not name a successor to Archbishop Gomez, who currently serves as the head of the Catholic Church in San Antonio. An archdiocesan administrator will be named for the Archdiocese of San Antonio on an interim basis upon Archbishop Gomez’s departure, which is scheduled for May 26.

Gomez was appointed archbishop of San Antonio in 2004 by Pope John Paul II. He succeeded Archbishop Patrick Flores, who stepped down after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. Flores had been the first Mexican-American to be named an archbishop when he was appointed in 1970.
