A lawyer for the Vatican said Monday it has cooperated with U.S. law enforcement officials who were trying to extradite an Indian priest to Minnesota where he faced charges of sexually abusing a teenage girl.

The Vatican office that investigates cases of priests accused of sexual abuse has recommended that the priest, the Rev. Joseph Jeyapaul, agree to be defrocked, said Jeffrey Lena, a California attorney for the Holy See. The Vatican has tried to aid law enforcement officials by providing an exact location in India where Father Jeyapaul can be found, Mr. Lena said.
