Abuse documents temporarily taken off site

Depositions, secret church files and other documents from a priest sex-abuse lawsuit have been taken down temporarily from The Commercial Appeal's Web site to allow attorneys in the case to be sure no victims' names are visible.

Last year the newspaper won a court order lifting the seal in the case against the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, but only after attorneys for the victim, John Doe, and the church could black out the names of victims and of priests with unverified complaints.

The attorneys entered the edited documents Tuesday in Circuit Court and, by court order, provided The Commercial Appeal with duplicate copies on computer disks. On Wednesday, however, attorneys noticed some of those names still were visible or had been overlooked in the editing process and asked The Commercial Appeal to take the documents down until they can review them once more.

Out of an abundance of caution for the victims and other innocent parties, the newspaper has agreed. The documents will be posted when the new editing is completed.
