  Catholic Priest Charged over Alleged Historical Sexual Assaults – Newcastle Area

Police investigating historic child sexual abuse allegations have arrested and charged a Catholic Priest today.

Strike Force Georgiana was established in March 2008 by detectives from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command, with the assistance of officers from the Newcastle Local Area Command.

About 9am today, a 48-year-old man attended Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was arrested by Lake Macquarie detectives.

The man was charged with commit act of indecency to a person under 16 years and indecent assault.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 5 May.

Police will allege the charges relate to the alleged assault of a child at a former convent in Maitland in the 1980’s.

The 48-year-old man is also facing 20 other charges for alleged child sex related/ indecent abuse offences and will appear in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 16 June.
