A former Anglican priest has been jailed for a second time on child sex offences.

Wilfred Edwin Dennis, 74, was found guilty late last year of abusing an altar boy in the mid-1970s.

The conviction followed the six-month sentence he served in 1970 over the indecent assault of another altar boy.

Imposing a 20-month jail term on Thursday, South Australian District Court judge Sydney Tilmouth said it remained unexplained why Dennis was allowed to return to the priesthood after his first conviction.

The judge had earlier said it was "astonishing" the former priest had been put back in a situation where he could be exposed to the temptation of young boys.

Judge Tilmouth said Dennis remained in a state of denial and his offending involved a "gross breach of trust".

The one count of carnal knowledge involved him having anal intercourse with the altar boy in a church robing room in Adelaide when the boy was aged about 15.

The judge set a non-parole period of 12 months after rejecting a defence application to delay the sentencing process because of Dennis' heart condition.
