Atheist activist, Richard Dawkins along with atheist author, Christopher Hitchens, have instructed lawyers to prepare an indictment on crimes against humanity in order to arrest Pope Benedict XVI during his state visit to Britain in September.

The charges arise out of the Pope's alleged cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic church while still a Cardinal and even as Pope. This weekend a new furor arose regarding a letter he signed in 1985 - while in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith dealing with sex abuse cases - which submitted that the "good of the universal church" should be considered before defrocking an American priest who had committed sex offences against two boys.

Utilising the same principles that led to the arrest of the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, Dawkins and Hitchens believe that they can overcome diplomatic immunity because the Pope is not the head of a state recognised by the United Nations and accordingly does not qualify for that protection.

In turn the lawyers preparing the brief are of the view that they can obtain the Crown Prosecution Service cooperation to charge the Pope failing which launch a private prosecution. If all else fails send it to the International Criminal Court.
