VICTIMS of sex abuse by Midland priests are demanding a police investigation into the Catholic Church after new claims of a cover-up.

Former Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, has been accused of failing to expose a paedophile priest during his time in the city between 2001 and 2008.

Now Archbishop of Westminster, he had previously chaired the church's child safety watchdog during his years in Brum.

But yesterday it emerged the watchdog had been accused of ignoring the actions of a pervert priest – claims the church and the Most Rev Nichols have strongly denied.

Father David Pearce was repeatedly investigated by church officials and police over abuse allegations and a High Court ruling in 2006 awarded damages to one of his victims.

Yet, amazingly, the priest remained in post at Ealing Abbey, West London, where he groomed and assaulted one final victim before his arrest in 2008.
