The Church did not wish to be an entity that imposed itself upon society, in spite of what some people thought, the Maltese bishops said yesterday.

At a time when many felt they were at the crossroads of life and faith, Archbishop Paul Cremona and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech called for the renewal and rejuvenation of the Church.

"We do not wish to be a fearful Church, a Church behind closed doors. We wish to be a Church that is not reluctant to enter into dialogue with the world and with all human beings, irrespective of their beliefs," the bishops' pastoral letter said.

The letter, being read during Sunday Mass today, was issued in anticipation of Pope Benedict XVI's first visit - described as "a moment of grace" - to Malta next weekend.

The bishops said they were convinced the Pope, through his words and spirituality, would raise many questions about Christ and his message. They encouraged everyone - not only those who were walking in the path of faith, but also those who felt burdened by doubts - to heed his message.

The Pope's profound personality, as well as his prophetic knowledge of these times, should enable the Maltese to open their eyes to their current situation.

They hoped the visit would not be simply a matter of ceremony and the Maltese would open their hearts to embrace this occasion and fortify their faith.

"There are those who are trying to silence his prophetic voice. We feel we are called upon to show our love for the Pope and ally ourselves with him."

In a separate statement, the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said the Pontiff was "greatly looking forward" to his apostolic visit to Malta.

In the days of preparation that remained, Cardinal Bertone said the Pope asked the Maltese to pray that his visit would be a time of spiritual renewal.

"Malta has remained staunchly faithful to Christ over many centuries, and has done much to defend the faith... The Holy Father knows how much you are attached to your great heritage, and he invites you to deepen this... notwithstanding that in today's society this carries the risk of being opposed, ignored or forgotten," he added.

Since the Church was celebrating the year for priests, Mgr Bertone said the Pope urged everyone to value the great gift of the priesthood and "to support and pray for your priests".
