The Vatican has clarified its position on the reporting of sexual abuse cases involving members of the Roman Catholic clergy.

For the first time its website has a guideline spelling-out that bishops and other high-ranking clergy should report sex abuse by priests to the police.

The Catholic Church has been hit by a series of child abuse scandals in recent years, including in Ireland, the US, Germany and Norway, and has faced criticism for failing to deal adequately with the problem. Russell Trott reports.
