Stockholm - The Catholic church in Sweden, a mainly Lutheran country, on Tuesday said it had received two complaints of child abuse by priests.

Both cases were several decades old. One of the cases dated back to the 1940s, the other was a little more recent, the church said.

"It is with deep sorrow I have received these complaints," Bishop Anders Arborelius said in a statement, adding he hoped that other victims would dare to come forward to ensure they got redress.

The priests mentioned in the complaints were no longer active, the church said.

Church spokeswoman Maria Hasselgren said the church had been "prepared" for complaints following recent disclosures of child abuse in neighbouring Denmark and Norway, and noted that Arborlius in a newspaper advertisement a few years ago had issued a public apology for any cases of abuse.

The Catholic church said it had an estimated 93,000 members in Sweden at the end of 2009. About 7 million of Sweden's 9 million people belong to the Church of Sweden, a Lutheran Evangelical church.
