A former teacher who has pleaded guilty to raping 12 of his students on the Darling Downs has had his sentencing adjourned.

Gerrard Vincent Byrnes pleaded guilty in the Toowoomba District Court today to 33 counts of indecent dealing with a child under 12, 10 counts of rape and one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child under 12, and was due to be sentenced.

But the case has now been adjourned for a week because a medical report submitted to the court yesterday suggests Byrnes may have early onset dementia.

Judge Deborah Richards acknowledged victims' families were frustrated, but told the court it was in everyone's interest that a proper investigation into the medical report take place.

Early in the proceedings a member of the public had threatened Byrnes as he sat in the dock but the man was lead away.
