THE principal of the Toowoomba Catholic primary school involved in the child sex abuse scandal was eventually fired.

The principal was charged and later found not guilty of failing to report to police a student's complaint that she was sexually abused by Gerard Vincent Byrnes.

The court case, which finished on December 1, heard a father of a victim told the principal in September, 2007, of her sexual abuse at the hands of Byrnes.

The principal reported the allegations to his superiors Christopher Fry and Ian Hunter.

The police were never contacted and the abuse remained secret for 14 months. During this time, Byrnes continued to molest and rape students.

Bishop Morris sacked the principal, Fry and Hunter on December 11 last year, stating "the principal's conduct compromised student safety by allowing and facilitating the teacher's return to the school as a relief teacher following his resignation in June, 2008".
