CEBU, Philippines – Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal has broken his silence over the death of one of his priests, whose body was found inside a pension house in Cebu City.

Cardinal Vidal said the public should respect the death of Fr. Alexander Salve of the Pardo Parish church. (Click here for story.)

The Cebu Archbishop said he finds nothing wrong with the priest being found in the pension house wearing only his underwear at the time of his death.

He, however, admitted that many priests have indeed violated their vow of celibacy.

Cardinal Vidal said that instead of further embarrassing the priests, the public should pray for them.

He added that the Catholic Church is doing everything it can to address celibacy.

Police said Salve was found dead inside Room 426 of the Pacific Tourist Inn located at the corner of Manalili and Balintawak streets in the downtown area.

The inn's staff told police that the priest checked in on Tuesday afternoon and registered under a different name.

Police said they received an anonymous call around 7 p.m. that something bad happened to the priest.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the priest's death. -- report from Reno Tallada, ABS-CBN Cebu
