A former Omaha priest who worked at numerous parishes in the city has been accused of sexually abusing a child in Texas where he most recently worked.

The Archdioceses of San Antonio reported that the Rev. John M. Fiala is the subject of a criminal investigation in connection with a 2008 incident in Rocksprings, Texas.

Fiala was removed from ministry that year and has not been reassigned.

From 1984 until 1995, Fiala worked at seven area parishes, including St. Columbkille in Papillion, St. Joan of Arc in Omaha, Christ the King in Omaha, St. Peter in Omaha, St. Mary in Spencer, Sacred Heart in Norfolk and St. Joseph in Wisner, according to the chancellor of the Archdioceses in Omaha, Joseph Taphorn.

In the spring of 2002, Omaha's Archdioceses received a complaint that Fiala made sexual advances toward a child in the mid-1980s, Taphorn said in a statement.

Sarpy County authorities were notified and Fiala's religious supervisor in Texas was also notified, though no criminal or civil charges were filed in connection to that report, Taphorn said.
