St. Charles, Ill. - New charges have been filed against a southwest suburban priest who allegedly with sexually assaulted and abused a child and attempted to abuse a second over a five-year span starting in 2005.

Fr. Alejandro Flores, 37, of the 600 block of Brook Forest Avenue in Shorewood was indicted Tuesday on one count of predatory criminal sexual assault, six counts of criminal sexual assault, six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of indecent solicitation of a child and one count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

Flores allegedly tried to kill himself in January after he learned he was facing allegations of sexual abuse. On Jan. 15, 2010, the state’s attorney's office filed a complaint charging Flores with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault, two counts of criminal sexual assault and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Authorities allege that between Jan. 1, 2005, and Jan. 1, 2010, he had sexual contact with a St. Charles minor younger than 13 when the alleged sexual contact began. Authorities also allege that during the same period, Flores attempted to have sexual contact with a second St. Charles minor –- the older sibling of the first victim.

Tuesday's indictments, which supersede the complaint charges filed Jan. 15, are based on information revealed as the investigation continued, according to a release from the state's attorney's office.

Since he surrendered on Jan. 20, 2010, Flores has been held in the Kane County Jail on $1 million bond. Should he post bail, he must surrender his passport, have no contact with the victims or their families, and have no contact with anyone under age 17.

His next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. on April 30 before Associate Judge T. Jordan Gallagher.

If convicted of all counts, Flores faces a minimum of 25 years in prison.

The case remains under investigation and anyone with information should call the Kane County Child Advocacy Center at (630) 208-5160.

At the time the alleged sexual contact began, Flores was a seminarian assigned to St. Mary’s Parish in West Chicago. He was later assigned to Holy Family Parish in Shorewood, and was ordained in the summer of 2009.
