KELOWNA -- He was accused of raping a teenage girl a year ago and on Tuesday all charges against a priest working at a Sikh temple in Kelowna were stayed by the Crown.

Key evidence was apparently fabricated.

Lukwinder Singh, 30, had pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and sexual interference.

His preliminary hearing was about to begin when Singh's lawyer says the girl admitted she lied to police about being pregnant.

"She bought a pregnancy stick and asked one of her friends to urinate on it so she could create incriminating evidence against Mr. Singh to prove that she's pregnant and Mr. Singh is the father of her child," says Birj Mohan.

The defence lawyer says his client's life was ruined by the false allegations.

Singh was also accused of assaulting his wife but Mohan says that charge was also withdrawn.

Singh is a citizen of India who has been in Kelowna for eight years on a work visa.
