A former Baptist pastor told a District Court jury yesterday that he loved the woman who has accused him of sexual assault and that there was no way he could be the father of her aborted child because he "was shooting blanks".

The pastor said that during the time of the alleged offences he had fallen in love with the woman and believed she had fallen in love with him, so much so that his wife felt their marriage was threatened.

"It was obvious we were close, perhaps too close … (she) had some concerns," he said.

And when the woman called him from abroad in February 2005 to tell him she was pregnant with his child, he said he was stunned.

He then visited a doctor to see whether his vasectomy 10 years earlier had failed. He said: "The doctors exact words were, 'You are shooting blanks'."

The former pastor faces 11 charges of sexual penetration, seven of indecent assault, two of burglary and one of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He has denied the charges, saying that he and the woman, who was a member of the northern Perth congregation, were engaged in an extramarital affair where all sexual activity was consensual.

He said he was never violent at any stage of their relationship and believed that he had always entered her home with permission. He said their first sexual liaison took place in the early hours of New Year's Day 2005 on the lawn of her home after they had planned to "consummate" their relationship after the two had been on missionary trips to Bali and Cambodia in 2004.

During those trips, he said, there had been no sex but that they had started falling in love with each other.

Their church work that led to them becoming involved later became a cover for their illicit meetings.

He told the court that he and the woman had several sexual encounters.

He denied threatening to commit suicide if she did not abort the baby but admitted joking with her that she must have had "an immaculate conception".

"I never knew to this day whether the pregnancy and the abortion happened," he said.

After the abortion he said their relationship slowly deteriorated and their encounters became less frequent. The abortion issue, he said, would be a source of frequent spats between them.

He denied assaulting the woman in early 2006, shortly after he announced his resignation from the Church, but admitted that, "I got down on my knees and I gave her a gentle peck on her bruised bottom".

Asked about his nicknames, he said he had been given the name "Jockey" early on in their affair after a sexual encounter in her spa bath.

The trial before jury continues.
