The Bishop of Clogher has resigned.

It's been confirmed that the Pope accepted Dr Joseph Duffy's resignation which was tendered to Rome last year under Canon 401.

The law states that diocesan bishops must submit their resignation to the pope on reaching the age of 75.

Dr Duffy was ordained a priest in 1958 and became Bishop of Clogher in 1979.

It is expected that the current Chancellor of Clogher and Bundoran native, the Rev. Msgr Liam McDaid will now become Bishop of Clogher.

The Diocese of Clogher includes County Monaghan, most of County Fermanagh as well as parts of Counties Donegal, Tyrone, Louth and Cavan.
